MTV To Launch Social Network TV

MTV Networks will launch in September a new tv network called Flux. The new network MTV Logowill feature user generated content in the form of videos and text messages sent in via cell phone. You can think of this as like taking YouTube and putting it on tv. Consumers will choose which videos get played on the channel by using a corresponding website. So not only do users generate the content, they progam the station as well. This could be really interesting if they follow through and truly let users control all the content and programming.

More Hints Of Apple Phone

Apple Computer CFO made some tasty comments about cell phones and music. It’s getting everyone hot and bothered again about the Apple cell phone people have been expecting. I think the Apple Phone is for real but I’m not sure what impact it will have. The primary thing I always want my cell phone for is calling so the question is what is the most valuable second feature. Music? PDA functions? GPS? I guess the answer is different for everyone. Personally I look for the PDA features, which I why I am waiting for the Treo 700P when it comes out for Cingular. But of you are a music freak, maybe the Apple Cell Phone will be a dream come true. I would rather have a separate iPod that had widescreen video playback. To each his own.  Good luck Apple. The cell phone market is crowded and tough.

DRM-less Music From Yahoo

I don’t see how Yahoo is going to get the record labels to go along with this, but they are currently testing an on-line music download service that would sell tracks without any DRM (digital rights management). Each song would be $1.99,Yahoo Music Logo which is double what they go for on iTunes. So, would you pay twice as much to get tracks without DRM? Will that be enough extra profit for the RIAA to get it’s panties out of a bunch? Hopefully one day we will get to find out.

Robert Scoble On Second Life

Former Microsoft and now just Tech Geek blogger Robert Scoble has some interesting points about the on-line world Second Life and doing business. I think he is right, the key may be the linking of Second Life and real world products. But the problem I see is Second Life is still very much a geek phenomenon. I’m not sure how or if it will every get to the masses because right now the software to run it is much to hard to use. Eric Rice also has some very interesting things to say about Second Life and technology in general.

Underground WiFi in Haifa – You Can’t Stop Intel

Intel has an R&D center in Haifa, Israel where they make the Centrino among other things. With Israel being a country constantly in conflict and sometimes under attack, Intel equipped the R&D center in Haifa with bomb shelters. Not only that, the shelters have a wireless WiFi network underground. You might think this is to keep in contact with the worldIntel Logo and it is, but it’s also so they can keep working. Never mind a few bombs falling, we have a deadline. Even now, as Hesbola attacks Haifa in the current conflict, Intel employees are working away. Only essential staff were in on Monday, but other companies like Microsoft has it’s employees stay home.

Maybe I’m a soft American, but if bombs start falling here in Southern California, the last thing I am thinking about is work. Kudos to the Israelis, they’re tough as nails.

YouTube On Fire

It was reported Sunday that on-line video king YouTube serves up more than 100 million videos per day. That’s per day folks. YouTube now accounts for 60% of all videos watched on-line. Google, Microsoft and Yahoo aren’t even close. MySpace is the closest at 19%. Welcome to Web 2.0, where being the big kid on the block doesn’t mean squat. Now YouTube hasn’t made a cent yet and who knows if they ever will, but they certainly have the audience. They have a huge opportunity, now it’s a matter of what they can do with it.
