More Trouble For Vista

So much development time and Microsoft still has problems with its new Windows Vista OS. New reports, including one from an analyst at Jupiter Research says Vista Beta 2 is still very buggy and unstable. I don’t care when this thing ships, people should stay away from it for a good while. Let things shake out and all the new PC owners that are stuck with it figure out all the problems.

Kevin Mitnick Hacked

Touche. Pakistani hackers broke into a website owned by famed ex-hacker Kevin Mitnick and defaced it.

More YouTube Validation

It’s funny when I read these “oh, look, people aren’t watching tv anymore. They’re on the Internet” stories. For those of us who have been living and breathing this stuff for a long time now, it’s like duh. A good article, nonetheless, on cnn.com about all of this. Mentions for The Long Tail as well.It amazes me the networks still bust a nut over schedule and time and day of the week. Things that are all meaningless for me. Most of the shows that I do watch, I couldn’t tell you when they are on. They are on when I want to watch them.

Second Life Like Avitar Chat

imvu has a new im chat client that uses 3D avatars much like what is used in Second Life. It’s a decent enough concept and certainly lighter weight than the full Second Life software, but it only runs on PC.

Microsoft Zune – Much Ado About Nothing

Gizmodo has posted a photo and some details of the Microsoft Zune mp3 player. Yawn. I think this is a whole lot of nothing. Microsoft is the 10,000lb gorilla but they have never been able to match Apple on ease of use or overall quality of experience. Plus, why would I walk away from the huge investment in songs I have purchased from iTunes that only play on iPods? Will Microsoft really offer to convert all of them to Windows Media format? From one proprietary DRM format to another. I don’t see where the customer wins. Might has well stick with the iPod.

Cell Phone For Diabetics

Now here is a great use of technology. Who need cameras and mp3 players in their cell phones. A cell phone from HealthPia that measures blood sugar levels and records them. This is really cool.

It’s Fantasy Football Time!

More lost productivity due to the Internet. This time the culprit is fantasy football. I will tell you from experience, it’s very true. Managing a team takes real work during the week to get ready for the weekend games. You have to keep up with the waiver wire, injuries, and matchups. Fortunately John Challenger, CEO of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc understands the deeper meaning behind it all.

However, Challenger encourages employers to embrace fantasy sports in order to foster a sense of camaraderie in the workplace.

“The potential damage to morale and loyalty resulting from a fantasy football ban could be far worse than the loss of productivity caused by 10 minutes of online team management,” said Challenger.

Especially with inter-company leagues, it’s a fun distraction from the grind of work. And forget fantasy sports, do you know how much on-line first person shooter games go on in the Silicon Valley at work?

Snakes On A Plane – Time For The Payoff

After untold Internet hype, this Friday Snakes on a plane with Samuel L. Jackson will open nationwide. This film has had an amazing run of user generated Internet marketing, more than any other film in history. Now we will see if that pays off at the box office or not. At the end of the day, this is a commercial product and it needs to sell. If it does, it could be a huge boon to this kind of new media marketing. Certainly, there is a core of Internet faithful, but can it reach a mass audience? Should be a interesting weekend; I’ll be there.

Myspace For Old Folks

It would be easy to make fun of this, but actually it’s a really good idea. The death notices may be a bit much, but what the hell, the Internet is for everyone.
