YES! This is what I have been waiting for. CBS announced they will put parts of their primetime fall lineup on the Innertube website. CSI, Survivor and the new show Jericho will be included. This will be free of charge and will have limited commercials. Very similar to what ABC did with Lost and Desparate Housewives last year. ABC will also continue to make shows available for free in the same way. This is a much better deal for the networks because viewers cannot fast forward through commercials. But the commercials are much less and have not bothered me much. A good trade off for getting them on-line. This could hurt iTunes because why buy a show when you can get it for free. The only reason now is to put it on your iPod.
So the liberal bloggers claim victory as they helped to defeat Joseph Lieberman in favor of anti-war but unknown Ned Lamont. I wouldn’t go to crazy over this. Don’t forget the last candidate they helped push forward, Howard Dean. He couldn’t even secure the nomination for president.
Republicans should be very happy. The farther left the Dems go, the less chance they have of winning anything. People are not happy with the Iraq war, but they’re not stupid either. Just pulling out as fast as we can would lead to complete disaster.
First Robert Scoble and now Niall Kennedy has announced he is leaving Microsoft to pursue other opportunities.
The popular on-line marketplace Craigslist is being used to traffic drugs and sex. I’m sure this is a great minority, but the press loves to latch on to something juicy and run with it. Guess what else is on Craigslist? Scammers and rip-off artists. As in life, be careful out there.
Transgaming has released a new portability engine for Intel Macs. This technology will allow PC games to be run on Intel Macs without the need for virtualization, Boot Camp, or traditional porting. Cider, as the technology is known, uses an optimized set of Win32 APIs. Very good news for Apple fans as the massive world of PC games will become available to run quickly and easily. I do wonder about speed, however. How much, if any, is the performance hit? Also, does this mean the death of Mac native games? Does it matter? Transgaming also makes a similar product for Linux.
After trying to co-opt the standard RSS icon for theselves and getting a smackdown from the community, Microsoft has announced it will use the standard icon as used by Firefox. Thanks Microsoft, that’s very big of you. Remember when they tried to rename RSS feeds to Web Feeds?
Wonderkid Shawn Fanning of Napster fame is back and his new technology is called Snocap. There is a preview out now that allows artists to sell music on sites like Myspace. The embeded player could be put anywhere, even on a blog. From the player, you can purchase tracks and you can get unrestricted MP3′s. Price and any DRM restrictions, if any, are decided by the artists.![]()
This could be a real threat to iTunes as an open format like MP3 would allow customers to put songs on any player they like and being able to sell music anywhere on the web is far more wide reaching then iTunes. For indie bands especially, this is a great thing but large established artists may stick to the tride and true iTunes model and Apple’s promotion machine.
Nice article from Steve Bryant at Google Watch asking if Google News is obsolete. I would say no, but it does have lots of competition. I still like Google News and use it but I also really like NewsVine as well. The best part of this piece is this diddy.
This hasn’t made newspapers very happy. Editors often bemoan that aggregators like Google News take traffic away from their sites and subvert the editorial process.
Cry me a river. Wake up and smell the Web 2.0 editors. News aggregators are great because you can get a variety of coverage from multiple sources at one time. Intelligent people don’t get all their news from one source. You have to read, watch or listen to a variety of sources to get the real picture. And God forbid if users subvert the all powerful editorial process. Being your own editor is always a good idea if you have the time. If you don’t, pick up the New York Times and be happy.

File under: Why did this take so long. Disney has released a portal site for kid-friendly video. Obviously, Disney itself has a huge wealth of content to draw from but they also include a nicely curated YouTube section. This alone could be a Godsend for parents who are worried about letting their … Read More
