Yet Another Widget Platform

Yikes, how many widget platforms do we need? Microsoft has widgets for Vista, Apple has Dashboard Widgets for OS X, Yahoo has widgets, Google has widgets. Now Fox Interactive has a widgets platform called Spring Widgets. Strange this is coming from Fox and I’m not sure what they are looking to get out of it. If they wanted widgets for Fox media properties, they could have created their own widgets for the other platforms. I also don’t know how they are going to compete with the likes of Apple, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo. And if you’re a developer, which widget platform are you going to develop for? Widgets are cool, but this is becoming a big mess.

Google Likes Radio

It was only a matter of time until Google came up with adsense for radio and the time is now. Google may even buy out or buy into the nations largest radio conglomerate, Clear Channel. No word on if this technology will be used for podcasting ad insertion, but it would seem silly to not offer that service. Remember the days when we all feared Microsoft was going to take over the world? Microsoft looks like the new IBM. Enter the reign of Google.

The Mobile Marketplace Is The Place To Be

With nearly 800 million handsets sold so far, it’s no wonder companies are rushing toGootube produce more mobile products. We’ve already talked about Google and Yahoo; now add YouTube (doh! that’s Google again!). YouTube says they will have a mobile version of the wildly popular video sharing service within a year. Cool, now I can watch guys get hit in the crotch with flying objects and emo girls anywhere!

New Google Gmail App for Cell Phones

Google has been making a strong play for the mobile/cell phone market lately. The latest effort is a Java based version of Gmail that will run on any cell phone that supports Java programs. This Gmail app looks and feels a little more like a traditional email application and does not require access via a web browser. I have run it and it’s pretty cool. I just wish Google would come up with a way to view multiple Gmail accounts from one interface.

I am glad to see Google up the ante in the mobile space. I hope it will get folks like Yahoo (they already have a strong mobile effort), Microsoft and others to push innovation for mobile computing. I have always maintained that technology will continue to get more mobile. It’s not so much about the computer on our desks anymore but all the various kind of gadgets we carry around, more of which are becoming connected devices.

Finally! Bidirectional Sync for Google Calendar

It’s only available for Mac, but this is the coolest app I have seen in awhile. SpanningSync will bidirectionally sync your Google Calendar and iCal applications. Even if you make changes on a Palm for example, that would sync back to iCal and then in turn Google Calendar.
